Prolegs of the white larvae (red headed pine sawfly) are naked and lack any hook-like crochets.

Caterpillar prolegs have hook-like crochets.

Skeletonization caused by elm leaf beetle.

Pear slug on cottoneaster.

Note the slimy slug-like appearance of this sawfly. Also note how it skeletonizes leaves by removing only the upper leaf surface.

Adult elm leaf beetles feed on leaves.
Elm leaf beetles have been a common pest in the mid-west, They have not been problematic since 1993 in Indiana. Larvae of elm leaf beetles feed on leaves.
