Blue spruce heavily infested with bagworms. Bagworms overwinter as eggs inside wingless females. Females remain in bags their entire lives.
Bagworms on arborvitae superficially resemble Douglas fir cones. Male bagworms fly to mate with females in the bags.
Close up of bagworm on twig. Up to 1000 caterpillars can hatch from each overwintering bagworm female. At first bags are small and difficult to see. Caterpillars cover themselves with freshly cut foliage as they feed.
