Staging Your EAB Infestation

You can map where your community is on the invasion wave by tracking the accumulation of ash trees have more than 30% canopy thinning. This process can help you convince your community that EAB will destroy ash trees and that they need to act to save the trees before trees are beyond saving. Follow these steps to stage your ash trees in 1 year.

  Step 1.

  • Year 1. During the summer (late June- August) Select equal numbers of ash trees that can be ranked as good ( < 10% canopy thinning) and fair (between 10% and 30% canopy thinning).
  • View this link for photos to help you estimate canopy thinning.

  Step 2.

  • Year 2. Survey the same ash trees to determine the percentage of the total that are ranked as poor or worse (>30% canopy thinning).
  • Match the percentage on the ash decline curve to see where you are in the cycle.
