Crop diagnostic training day to be held in southeastern Indiana

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A pest and crop training day provides hands-on experience and continuing education to southeastern Indiana on June 22.

The day's events will be held at the Southeast Purdue University Agricultural Center, located at 4425 E. County Road 350 N. in Butlerville. A map can be found online.

Registration begins at 8 a.m., with sessions continuing until 4 p.m. Concurrent sessions will run from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and from 10:45 to 12:45 p.m.

Lunch will be provided from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.

A plot walk will cover fertilizer rate differences, conventional versus no-till, plant population differences and plant responses to different herbicide treatments.

Speakers and topics include:

  • Shawn Conley, Purdue Extension soybean specialist, who will discuss the basics of soybean scouting, soybean growth and development, and seed treatments. He will also give a soybean rust update.
  • John Obermeyer, Purdue integrated pest management supervisor, who will speak about basic insect scouting techniques, soybean and corn insects, seed treatments and determining treatment thresholds.
  • Bill Johnson, Purdue Extension weed specialist, who will cover basic weed scouting and identification, treatment thresholds and weed control in a Round Up-ready system.
  • Bob Nielson, Purdue Extension corn specialist, who will explain the basics of corn scouting, seed corn growth and development, as well as nitrogen management.

A maximum of six continuing credit hours are available for completing the program, as well as comparable credits for certified crop advisers. More information about continuing education credits and an application form can be found at the Indiana Certified Crop Adviser Web site.

Registration costs $75 and is due by June 15 at the Purdue Extension Office in Ripley County, 525 W. Beech St., Osgood, IN 47037. Registration includes lunch and refreshments. Checks should be made payable to the Ripley County CES Fund.
