2008 Entomological Society of America North Central Branch Meeting

By Steve Yaninek
March 27, 2008

(Left) Annie Spikes won first place for her paper on “Chemically-mediated mate recognition in the primitive longhorned beetle Mallodon dasystomus (Say)” in the MS category in Session I
Alana Jacobson who won second place for her poster on “Status of pyrethroid resistance in Indiana and Illinois populations of Helicoverpa zea” in the MS category

The event featured 10 symposia, BS/MS/PhD student competition sections, and several submitted papers sections. The number of participants was lower than normal, but this may have been because the meeting was at the eastern edge of the branch, and it started the day after Easter.

Purdue was represented by 7 students, a postdoc and 7 faculty members. We had a Linnaean Games team that compete that made a good showing before being knocked out by Manitoba, and students who made 2 paper and 2 poster presentations. I also counted 9 Purdue alumni at the meeting including Ken Pruess, Phil Sloderbeck, Dave Hogg, Mike Culy, Ed King, Rob Wiedenmann, Kathy Heinsohn, Luis Cañas and Andy Michel.

Congratulations are in order for Annie Spikes (Matt Ginzel is her advisor) who won first place for her paper on “Chemically-mediated mate recognition in the primitive longhorned beetle Mallodon dasystomus (Say)” in the MS category in Session I, and Alana Jacobson (Rick Foster is her advisor) who won second place for her poster on “Status of pyrethroid resistance in Indiana and Illinois populations of Helicoverpa zea” in the MS category
