GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Respect Boundaries program
All incoming students (undergraduate and graduate) must complete the Respect boundaries program, or a registration hold will be placed on the student’s account. If you have received an email directing you to complete the course, please do so. Some general information on the program and how to complete it follows: WHAT: All new incoming students must
complete the Respect Boundaries: Sexual Violence Awareness program. If
students do not meet the deadline, they may not be able to register for
classes for the Fall 2017 semester.
A hold will be placed on their registration until they complete the program. WHO: All new incoming students includes new freshman, transfer, graduate, and professional students. This includes distance education students, non-degree seeking students, and part-time students. WHY: The Campus Sexual Violence
Elimination (SaVE) Act, a federal law, requires all new incoming students to
receive primary prevention and awareness education about sexual violence. WHEN:
The course was
available February 6th, 2017. Students received an initial
announcement via email on Monday, January 9th. The initial
deadline for completion was Monday, February 20th HOW: Students may access Respect
Boundaries through Blackboard.
There are three modules associated with the program.
Students must complete all three modules to obtain credit for this
program. The program should take about 60 minutes to complete. Indiana Butterfly
Study: Assistance needed!
Andrew Stoehr is a professor in
the Department of Biological Sciences at Butler University in
Indianapolis. His lab studies the common and invasive cabbage white
butterfly, Pieris rapae. He wrote to us: “We are particularly
interested in the phenotypic plasticity of the black wing pattern traits of
this butterfly and in how environmental factors, particularly temperature and
day length, during larval and pupal development affect these traits. We’ve
recently published a paper that described some experimental work conducted in
the lab (see link below) but our current focus involves work on wild-caught
specimens. We have a very large data set on seasonal wing pattern variation
in butterflies collected in central Indiana but we would love to be expand
this work to include specimens across a larger latitudinal gradient. The
‘north-south’ orientation of Indiana and the large number of
biology/entomology programs at our colleges and universities makes such a
state-wide effort perfectly suited to expand the study in this way. I am writing to entomologists
or other biologists at various Indiana colleges, universities and other
organizations to solicit help in this endeavor. If you, your research
students and/or your classroom students (or friends or kids!) would be willing
to capture and send me cabbage white butterflies, I would be incredibly
grateful! In addition, these specimens would also become part of an
even larger global project on cabbage white butterflies through the Pieris
Project (see link below). This project is examining wing pattern variation on
a global scale, and also examining the population genetics of cabbage whites
to understand invasion history and population structure. If you think you and/or your
students can help in any way, please let me know and I can send you more
information! We would welcome any level of involvement, whether it’s just a
few specimens haphazardly captured now and then or a more extensive
systematic collection effort. (If you have already received a similar email

Undergraduate Research Positions Available

Callout!
The STAR program is seeking
well-informed and resourceful undergraduate students who are reliable,
proactive and customer-oriented with a proven willingness to help new
students. They are recruiting for part-time ($8/hr) as well as
full-time ($9/hr) positions.
They want to recruit about 60-65 ambassadors (a good mix of part-time and
full-time). The callouts are on March 1st and March 2nd
and students only have to attend one of the callouts (see flier
attached for details). You can also find attached a detailed job
description . Please share this information with your students and feel
free to redirect to me any questions that you may get regarding the position

Representatives from Purdue Northwest will be visiting the West Lafayette campus on Thursday, March 9 to register students for Summer 2017 classes. The PNW representatives will be available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the East Foyer in Stewart Center. During this event, West Lafayette students can register for summer classes at Purdue Northwest. Divisions) Students who miss any of the deadlines in red may incur a
$200 Late
Graduation Deadline Fee if they would like to maintain their candidate
status for the spring session. Candidates who request to make updates to an
already deposited thesis or dissertation, or who have been listed on the
candidate roster for the same degree more than two consecutive sessions, may
also incur this fee. Between now and January 13, departments have access to
add CAND 99100 (general candidacy) registrations for candidates using the CRN
28641. After Jan. 13, all CAND 99100 registration requests should be emailed
to gradweb@purdue.edu. Exam and
Degree Only (CAND 99300/99200) registration requests should always be sent to
the Graduate School via a Form 23. These dates, as well as other key 2016-17 deadlines, are available online on the Graduation Deadlines Calendar webpage for your reference. New Thesis
Templates Available
The new thesis templates are live on the Thesis Templates Page: http://www.purdue.edu/gradschool/research/thesis/templates.html As templates are updates, the newest versions will be uploaded to that webpage, so please check the thesis template page to be sure you are using the most recent version. Deposit Procedures
The Thesis/Dissertation office has updated the new Electronic Thesis Acceptance Form so that students will now receive e-mail notifications confirming their successful thesis deposits in lieu of the traditional GS Form 16 (Thesis Deposit Receipt). In addition to confirming successful deposits, the e-mails will also contain useful information for students relating to a) timely payment of their thesis deposit fees, b) accessing myPurdue to view their approved electronic thesis acceptance forms, and c) how to complete our Thesis Process Survey to provide feedback that will help us improve our student services. They will continue to accept hard copy thesis forms (e.g., GS Form 9, 32, etc.) until the end of this term (Fall 2016). Students who submit hard copy forms during deposits will continue to receive the traditional GS Form 16 (Thesis Deposit Receipt) via e-mail PDF attachment along with a “cc” to their respective graduate contacts.
