Jan Douglas Hacker, 61, of St. Albans, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, January 12, 2008 at home.

A native of Converse, Ind., born on June 15, 1946, Jan is the son of the late Dean L. and the late Norma Hacker.

Jan retired from the West Virginia Department of Agriculture after 32 years of service as an entomologist and assistant director of the Plant Industries Division. Since his retirement, he worked part-time for the U.S. Forest Service as a key member of the Gypsy Moth Suppression program. In recognition of his work in this area, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2007 National Gypsy Moth Review.

Jan had been an active leader within the Boy Scouts of America, serving as a role model for countless young men. He served as Troop 250 scoutmaster, assistant scoutmaster, and troop committee chairman; Pioneer District camping committee, Buckskin Council properties chairman and was a proud member of the Ramp Patrol.

Jan is survived by his wife, Pamela Sue Hacker; his son, Gregory John Hacker and his wife Cathy of Colorado Springs, Colo.; his daughter, Dawn Marie Miller and her husband Jeff Miller; grandchildren, Megan and Griffin Miller of Mason, Ohio; and brothers, Bill and Marc Hacker.

In lieu of flowers, Jan had requested that donations be made to Buckskin Council BSA, HospiceCare Dunbar, West Virginia, or the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Services will consist of a visitation with family and friends from 1 to 3 p.m. at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 15, 2008, in St. Albans followed by a memorial service held at 3 p.m.
