The Food Pest Management program's primary mission is to design integrated management strategies for insect pests affecting the food industry. The research and extension programs investigate pest problems from the grain storage bin to the food processor, warehouse, distribution center, transportation routes, retail outlets, and home pantry. New management strategies such as grain chilling, ozone, and fumigant are developed through the exploitation of vulnerabilities in pest biology and behavior. Additionally, the influences of sanitation level and environmental manipulation on pest population development are examined. Finally, the efficacy of current and novel monitoring tools are tested.
