The IPM Technical Resource Center at Purdue University has recently complete a two-year project funded by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) to conduct pilot Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs in 2 school corporations and 4 childcare centers in Indiana.

Integrated Pest Management, or IPM, is a process for achieving long term, environmentally sound pest suppression using a variety of control methods. IPM emphasizes non-chemical controls, such as reducing pest access to food, water and living spaces, and sealing up pest entry routes into buildings. Pesticides are used only when a confirmed pest problem is present. Preventative pesticide treatments are replaced with careful monitoring for pests. If a pesticide is needed to control a pest, the least-hazardous but effective pesticide is used.

An awards ceremony was held on November 14, to recognize most of the childcare facilities that participated in pilot IPM programs.
