OVEA 2006 Nineteenth Annual Forum Results

The 2006 Annual Forum was held on November 17, 2006 at Northern Kentucky University, Newport, KY. Twenty-three students from six different universities took part in the competition.

 

We would like to thank all our judges for their generous time commitment and important contribution to our association. We would like to acknowledge the following members of OVEA who served as judges at our meeting:

The high light of the meeting was the student presentations. Papers were presented on diverse entomological topics and awards for first, second, and third place were presented in the Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy, categories as follows:

 

2006 Student paper Competition Winners:

Bachelor of Science Category

First Place: John Shukle from Purdue University presented a paper entitled "mtDNA barcoding for taxonomic identification within the genus Agrilus".

Second Place: Zachary Bozic from Wittenberg University presented a paper entitled "Extreme tolerance to heat characteristic of the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus".

Third Place (TIE): Cheryl Lindsay from the University of Kentucky presented a paper entitled "The process of conducting a genus level revision using Amputoearinus (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Agathidinae) as an example". Justin Tank from Wittenberg University presented "A maternal effect that inhibits the ability by ticks to absorb water vapor from the air".

 

Master of Science Category

First Place: Ye Ye from The Ohio State University presented a paper entitled "Reproductive competency of Reticulitermes flavipes neotenics".

Second Place: Paul Marquardt from Purdue University presented a paper entitled "Mating and dispersal behavior of the Western corn rootworm Diabrotica virgifera virgifera (LeConte) in B.t. cornfields".

Third Place (TIE): Thelma Heidel from Purdue University presented a paper entitled "Survey of Indiana aphids and associated natural enemies at a single prairie location in Indiana". Leo Stellwag from Ball State University presented a paper entitled "Cues utilized by male crab spiders (Misumenoides formosipes) in navigation during mate-searchs".

First Place: Alvaro Romero from the University of Kentucky presented a paper entitled "Detection of resistance to pyrethroid insecticides in populations of the bed bug Cimex lectularius (Heteroptera: Cimicidae) collected in Ohio and Kentucky".

Second Place: Craig Stillwell from the University of Kentucky presented a paper entitled "Environmental effects on sexual size dimorphism of a seed-feeding beetle".

Third Place: Joshua Benoit from The Ohio State University presented a paper entitled "Mechanisms for the northern house mosquito, Culex pipiens, to suppress water loss during diapause".
