This leaf has been skeletonized by an elm leaf beetle. The pest only removed the leaf tissue between the veins. This leaf cutter bee is a beneficial insect and not a pest. It is an important pollinator.
This defoliation is call notching. These irregular notches are typical of leaf notching weevils like black vine weevil. European pine sawflies removed the young foliage of this pine.
Circular notches are caused by leaf cutter bees. This European pine sawfly is laying an egg in a Scotch pine needle. Note how its sawlike ovipositor is cutting a slit in the needle and leaving behind a yellow scar. Yellow scars are diagnostic of an infestation.
