Linnaean Team Captain
The Linnaean Games is a 'college bowl' type of trivia competition with an entomological theme. The games are held at ESA branch and national meetings. Each team has a captain who is responsible for recruiting, organizing, and leading a school's Linnaean Team as it prepares and competes in the games. Method and frequency of practices are up to the discretion of the captain in collaboration with the rest of the team and the team coach. The current coach for Purdue's Linnaean Team is Dr. Linda Mason. Teams must first participate in branch-level games. If a team is the winner or runner up, they advance to the national meeting games. Often winning teams are awarded some compensation towards fees for attending the National Meeting. Contact information, deadlines, and official rules can be found on the NCB- ESA website.

The goals of the committee are to advise the department on revising and updating the curriculum, reviewing classes taught, updating teaching resources, and ensuring the rigor of undergraduate/graduate coursework. Meetings are about an hour and are held once every 1 or 2 months. The student representative is also expected to go on the May teaching retreat.

Usually two graduate students work with Jonathan Neal on this committee, Thelma, EGO president, also helps with these duties.

Graduate Student Symposium
The graduate student symposium (GSS) is an annual event held in our department every Fall. This is a special event in the department as it would provide a great opportunity to present your results or if just started, to state your hypothesis. Further, since it is held prior to the Annual ESA meeting, the GSS is a great session to participate and perform a dry run of your presentation or poster that would be presented at the ESA. The evaluations performed for each participant is based on the criteria that would be considered in any given competitive session that you would face outside the department. As a result, the feedback that a student gets is very useful for ones own improvement. The primary contact for this event is Dr. Jonathan Neal, who shows immense interest in helping out students and in encouraging participation.

The graduate students in the department formed a journal club in the fall of 2006 to discuss classic and current scientific papers. The club meets every two weeks for lunch and all members of the department are invited to attend. Lively discussions are held about a variety of topics, where students learn about more than just scientific methods. This forum provides a link to the world outside of each individual student’s research interests and is a valuable learning tool.
